Hospital Visit

On the 4th of December selected primary campus students from Goroka Grammar School visited the children’s wards (4, 2 and 1), at the Goroka Base General Hospital, bearing gifts and Christmas joy. The children were accompanied by Ms. Poion and two teacher aides, Ms. Baital and Ms. Morofa. We had 20 students in total, which comprised of approximately 5 representatives per grade, from students in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Hospital visits have been at tradition at Goroka Grammar School for almost 15 years and we have found them to be one of the most exciting events of the year. They always take place in Week 9 of Term 4, near the Christmas holidays. Students from Day-care to Grade 12 donate an extensive array of items to the hospital drive. Items include toys and lollies, as well as necessities such as toiletries, clothes and other sanitary items.  This year, the hospital drive was organised by Ms. Poion, who has taken a leading roll over the last 5 years. We had over 50 goodie bags to give to children and their families. We even had Santa Claus with us, who some say was a grade 4 student, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

Our program at the hospital began at 12pm with the singing of carols, this was followed by a fellowship from Ms. Poion and the distribution of Gifts. The visit was then concluded at 1pm and students returned to the school.

“Aude Aliquid Dignum” or “Dare to do something worthwhile,” is the motto here at Goroka Grammar School and we believe events such as these, solidify the foundation of doing something worthwhile- within our students. We hope it teaches our children compassion, gratitude, kindness and respect for all people. All while bringing some Christmas joy to those in need.
