COVID-19 Update 2

ATTENTION: ALL PARENTS, GUARDIANS, STUDENTS & STAFF OF GOROKA GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Update 2.

Many parents must be concerned about their children’s education as a result of the nationwide closure of schools in response to the threat of COVID-19.

Accordingly I wish to update you and the students regarding the options open to us as an educational institution. Firstly we are bound by Government and Department of Education directives and for this reason the school has closed for two weeks. Goroka Grammar School has deemed this enforced shutdown to be our term 1 holiday and if we are allowed to commence classes again on Monday 6 April this will be the start of term 2 for the 2020 academic year.

However if the shutdown becomes prolonged, beyond April 6, we intend to offer online lesson content to our students. In fact some of our teachers are already providing work for the grade 12 students during this current shutdown. Through this method the students will be able to complete the educational year and move on to the next grade in 2021. The only grade that this does not apply to is grade 12 and whether this year’s year 12 students will be able to progress to tertiary institutions next year will depend on grade 12 national examinations being conducted this year and this is in the hands of the National Government.

For now we have two weeks to prepare for the possibility of providing online educational content and intend to have content ready to trial from April 6.
